3 Ways to Wear a Maxi Dress

One of my all-time favorite fashion pieces is the maxi dress. It's an easy way to get casual elegance without looking overdone, under-dressed, or having to think too hard. There are endless options to pair with it to create a totally unique look each time it's worn. Maxi dresses have gained popularity in the past two years and for good reason. They're great to grab when you have nothing else to wear, and there are so many prints and styles to choose from. They're breezy, chic, and perfect for spring and summer. My biggest problem with maxi dresses is that almost all are either strapless, halter, or spaghetti-stapped, which means it may be a "no-go" for a lot of you girls. Don't despair! There is still hope for those of you who want to try this trend and look classy. I'm going to show you three ways to transform a slinky, boring maxi dress into an amazing go-anywhere outfit.

How to Wear Rompers

Fashion trends come and go, and some are trickier than others to pull off. Rompers fall into this category. Why? Worn on the wrong figure, they can be unflattering. It's also hard to find a modest romper. On a positive note, rompers take the guess work out of pairing the perfect top with shorts. Should you try this trend? GFG is here to help you decide.

Totally Cute Tankinis

Hey, girls! Sorry it's been a while. To make it up to you, here are some great tankinis that are cute and affordable. Plus, tankinis give you some tummy coverage that you can't get from a string bikini. (And you know we LOVE that.) Believe me, I know how hard it is to shop for swimsuits. I stopped by Target the other day, and they had the cutest bikinis adorned with anchors, flamingos, and flowers. I found a few one-pieces and tankinis, but the bikini-to-tankini ratio is overwhelming. The worst part? The modest swimsuits didn't have flamingos. Soooo disappointing.

I'll admit, I'm not too crazy about animal print pizazz, but can you really beat a $15 swimsuit? I don't think so. I like the striped one because it has a fun neckline and swimshorts. I LOVE swimshorts. The Lord and Taylor suit may be a little bit pricier, but the color and ruching are just sooo pretty. This swimsuit would be super flattering on anyone with a warm or olive skin tone.

Floral swimsuits are pretty traditional, but I thought this Lord and Taylor one was super cute. This one's neckline is quite low, though, so don't try it on if you're wary of showing that much skin. Macy's nautical two-piece looks a lot like the swimsuit I had last summer (and still hold onto, even with the resewn straps, because I love it oh-so-much). The nautical look is really "in" right now, but don't fall for horizontal stripes if you're super curvy because they'll make you look wider than you are. Now, this Nordstrom swimsuit is absolutely perfect for slimming down your waist (or adding some curves if you're a little boyish).

No matter what swimsuit you decide, give it a dressing room test to see if it makes the cut. Lift your arms over your head. Bend over in front of the mirror. Do you need a little more coverage or support in the chest? Will the top fall off when you dive? (That's never fun, trust me....) Would it be better if you had swim shorts or a skirt instead? Make sure that whatever suit you get, you'll love it all summer long.

Build Your Own Swimsuit from $10

Looking for a new swimsuit? I'm always on the lookout for new modest swimwear, so I was really pumped when I saw that Newport News had a "build your own bikini from $10". Of course, I'm no fan of bikinis, but I decided to take a look since it was such a great deal.
You choose your top -- bikini, tankini, halter, or strapless. Then you choose a bottom - bikini, skirt, or shorts. Lastly, you choose a pattern and view your look on a model.
While there were tankinis, some of them were low cut, but none were explicitly immodest because Newport News makes clothing for real women (and most real women don't want everything on display). Most of the tops don't completely cover your hips, either.
So, stop by the Newport News Swimwear Department and tell me what you think. I'd love to hear your opinions.

Beauty Tips for the Pool and Beach

Headed to the swimming pool or beach? Tired of dry, chlorinated hair or skin? Wondering how you should do your hair and makeup? Make a splash with our top tips for looking and feeling great in the water this summer.
Protection from Chlorine
Chlorine is a cleaning chemical found in pools which can do some major damage on your hair, leaving it dry and brittle.
  • Rinse your hair with cool water before you get in the pool. Your hair will soak up this clean water instead of the pool water.
  • Rinse your hair when you leave the pool. This time, use shampoo and conditioner as normal to wash out the chlorine.
Protection from the Sun
While you're soaking up some Vitamin D, make sure you're staying safe from early wrinkles, sunburns, and skin cancer.
  • After swimming, sprinkle clean water over your skin, focusing on your arms. Use gentle body spray or lotion in your favorite scent to replenish the moisture lost to the sun or chlorine.
  • Use sunblock of at least 30 SPF and reapply every hour.
  • Oversize sunglasses are not only chic, but they protect the sensitive skin around your eyes from the sun's harmful rays.
  • Your lips can get burned, too, so slather on some lip balm with SPF.
  • A big floppy sunhat will shield your face and hair. (It's super stylish, too.)
  • If you get a sunburn, use aloe vera to soothe your skin.
Makeup
When you're at the pool or beach, you should focus on having fun and not on your makeup. But if you feel like you need a little extra coverage in the water, here are some easy tips.
  • Use waterproof mascara only when you're near water because it can dry out your lashes.
  • Use a tinted moisturizer with SPF to even out your skin tone.
  • If you must wear blush, opt for the cream variety -- they won't wash away as quickly.
  • A pretty lip balm or gloss with SPF gives you a perfect poolside pout.
Hair
You can leave your hair down, or pull it away from your face with these ideas.
  • A simple ponytail is a classic poolside look.
  • Beachy waves are super low-maintenance.
  • A side braid is unexpectedly stylish.
  • A quick bun or updo is great when you plan on keeping your hair dry.
