I have experienced more, felt more, and learned more in these months than I have in any period of my life thus far. Attending a university has made me look at the world in a completely new way -- and I'm hoping that as these changes occur, I am learning to look at things in a more godly, objective, and compassionate way. It's been a long time since we last spoke -- I know I'm terrible, forgive me -- so here are two life-changing discoveries I made this school year. Share your own in the comments!

1. It's okay to be alone sometimes.
I told you earlier that my boyfriend cheated on me and left me during my first week of college. I didn't understand how this could happen to me -- I still don't -- when this was a boy who swore to protect my heart and honor me in everything he did. I'm slowly learning to be less trusting and to depend upon myself to guard my heart because I can't give any man that responsibility again. His leaving was one of the hardest struggles I have ever faced in my life, and it still hurts -- but I'm getting through it.

Would I take him back if he asked? No, and that's a huge step for me. I'm learning it's okay to pursue God on my own and create my own happiness. I've grown more this year than I ever did in any relationship. In 1 Corinthians 7:34, Paul says, "the [single] woman is anxious about the things of the
Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the [taken] woman is
anxious about worldly things, how to please her [partner]". Even my exes agree I'm a great girlfriend, to the point of putting my man's needs before my own emotional and spiritual well-being. My relationship was distracting me from pursuing God and his best for me.

Romans 8:28 says, "We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." God saw that my relationship wasn't good for me, and he saved me from someone who would have been an unfaithful marriage partner. Was I angry at God? Of course! But Satan always lets us remember, dwell on, and magnify the good aspects of a relationship while completing forgetting all the reasons it ended in the first place.

2. When you can't be alone, surround yourself with people who won't make you lonely.
My roommate and I bonded, in part, because I needed her after my breakup. I needed someone. I never imagined we would ever be as close as we are, but she has become the greatest friend I've ever had. I'm not good at making friends, but God has blessed me with some amazing new people who I know will always be here for me. If you are going through tough times, find at least one person you can count on. There is always someone. I thought I was completely alone, but God had other plans. There is someone out there who is willing to listen and help you with whatever is happening, no matter how hopeless you feel. If nothing else, email me -- I'll always listen.

God had a plan when he let my relationship end. God had a plan when he chose my new friends, knowing they would be the ones to carry me through that pain. It's okay to doubt his work in your life, but I promise, once you are through the storm you will see how he has been guiding and providing every step of the way.Melissa Reneehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16645691221964828580noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466870668952434250.post-67212616171961322812014-10-20T12:36:00.000-05:002014-10-20T12:36:12.642-05:007 Bible Verses to Start Your Week

Need a quick pick me up? Grab a highlighter and mark these verses in your Bible to get you focused on God this week.

Rest in the Lord today.
They who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:30-31)

Trust in God this week.

Fear
not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will
strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous
right hand. (Isaiah 41:10)

Ask God to help you deal with your struggles.

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22)

Set your heart on what God wants for you.

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. (Romans 8:6)

Spend time in prayer.

And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. (1 John 5:14)

Don't be a slave to temptation.

No
temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is
faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but
with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may
be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Seek God above all else.

He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:6)

Being a freshman in college is an amazingly strange feeling. I'm taking classes that have challenged me to think creatively (and actually study). I'm paying for my own groceries, my own gas, my own phone bill. I'm learning to get involved, re-learning how to make friends, and sometimes I'm even partying. But is the college experience all there is?

A lot of us go to college to pursue the American dream. We can party for the first two years, make some crazy friends and collect even crazier stories. The last two years of college is when we are supposed to clean up our act, getting interviews, setting up our career, and finding Mr. Right as if the past two years never happened. Once we get our white picket fence, loving spouse, and our 2.5 kids, is that it for us? Is there anything else to pursue?

The truth is that the college experience is great, the American dream is great, and God still has even greater gifts and experiences waiting for you. Life isn't about skipping from one party, experience, city, job, or goal to another. God gave you this life so you can grow in the process. Your job is not to have fun in college and achieve success later in life, although those things are great. You are filled with a divine purpose to become more like Christ.

God has given you the power to change the world. What are you doing right now -- in your high school, in your university, in your home, and in your city to spread the love of Christ? When people see the way you live, do they see purpose and joy and determination? That is your goal, above all else. That is the life we all need to pursue. Everything else will fall into place.

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. (Philippians 1:9-11)

Hey girls! It's been a long time since I've posted, I know. And I apologize from the bottom of my heart. If you thought I fell off the face of the earth, good news -- I'm still here, with quite a few stories to tell.

The biggest change in my life is my freshman status in an awesome university. That's right, your little girl is all grown up and gone to college! Is it as amazing as everyone portrays it to be? No, but I'm here and I can't leave.

As I realize my readers have grown up with me (and to the newer people, welcome!), I want to share my experiences and tips for surviving college, and I figure you girls can probably give me good advice as well in the comments. Y'all know I struggle with motivation and sticking to things, but I actually think it will be easier to keep this blog up while I'm in college -- and you can help me with that. I was so happy when I logged in today and saw your comments in the sidebar. I thought this little blog was a happy forgotten memory, but I love how when I go through a rough time you girls continue to encourage each other here.

To those of you who have left me emails, I want to apologize for not responding. I have gone through a very rough time the past few months. I went through two relationships, the most recent being with my best friend. He broke up with me a few days ago and I can't even begin to explain how much it hurts. Part of my problem was I loved him so much, I placed my identity in a man instead of God and myself, and when the relationship failed, I felt like there was nothing left. I still feel that. And throughout the time I've been away my faith has been shaky. But I'm hoping blogging again might help me through it.

So here's to another great schoolyear at Girls for God. Leave a comment and let me know how you've been!

Lots of love,

1. Revlon Lip Butter in Berry Smoothie - This gives you a pretty pout (or smile!) without a heavy lipstick feel, leaving your lips soft with a subtle shine and a color that's like your natural lips, just a little dressed up. No mirror required!

2. Clinique All-Over Face Color in Almond Blossom - This is the most expensive item on the list, but it doubles as a blush and bronzer. Lightly dust it over your cheeks, forehead, and chin for a healthy, effortless glow.

3. Hard Candy Glow All the Way in Doll Face - I hated this product at first, but it works like a charm if you know how to use it. I dab it under my eyes before applying foundation to brighten my face. When I've had a long day, I use just the tiniest bit on my browbone and the inner corners of my eyes to make me look more awake. I'm not one for shimmer, but there is a time and a place for everything, right?

4. Hard Candy Glamoflauge Concealer - Designed to hide tattoos, this handy duo covers up blemishes like nobody's business. It comes with a liquid concealer and an optional pencil to use underneath. When your foundation starts to fade in the evening, this will keep your zits, marks, and acne scars from saying hello to everyone at the party.

5. Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder in Translucent - This seems to be everyone's favorite powder. Grab a fluffy brush and sweep it over your face to set your makeup and keep shine at bay. Be sure to grab the translucent (colorless) shade, as the pigmented options will cake over your foundation.

Fall is my favorite time of year. Pumpkin lattes, cozy sweaters, and warm dinners make this season stand out from the others. Of course in Texas I'm still enduring t-shirt weather, but chilly days are ahead. Here's what I'm doing to have a perfectly cozy season for the next few months. Care to join me?

1. Clean your room. Before you freak out, this will actually make a huge difference in your peace of mind this season! I am notorious for never doing laundry, which means my laundry basket overflows onto my floor in all directions. I'd rather fork over my minumum wage paycheck and buy new clothes than do a load of laundry. Do I have a problem? Yes, but acceptance is the first step. Actually cleaning my room is the second. You can't get cozy in a messy room.

Cleanliness is next to godliness, and having an organized space where you can study, chill, and sleep will actually reduce stress in your life. (And you'll possibly end up with clean clothes you never knew you had.) Set a day where you are going to clean your room -- no exceptions, no excuses. Turn up some good music, grab a trash can and a laundry basket, and get to it. Section off your room -- start with getting things off your floor, then move to your desk, or your shelves, and get a load of laundry going. Take a break to get a snack, but don't have a major chill-out session until you're all done. Once your room is clean, you can dance or do cartwheels or Instagram that floor or just sleep -- now you're free to enjoy your room.

2. Buy a new fragrance. Look for something that gets you in the holiday spirit -- perhaps a warm vanilla body spray or peppermint lotion. Bath and Body Works has some great mid-price scents and Victoria Secret has some higher priced (but really awesome-smelling!) perfumes. If holiday fragrances don't tickle your fancy, try a coconut scent -- it's warm but doesn't scream Christmas cheer.

Some of my favorites:

Secret Wonderland, Bath & Body Works

Warm Vanilla Sugar, Bath & Body Works

Vanilla Bean Noel, Bath & Body Works

Ginger Sparkle, The Body Shop

Warm & Cozy, Pink

3. Wear big chunky sweaters. Oversized knits are so cozy and stylish at the same time -- they really do give you the best of both worlds. You can find them almost anywhere, or head to a local thrift store to score some cheap (and vintage) finds none of your friends will have. To avoid looking like your grandpa, pair big sweaters with skinny jeans and some ankle boots. Stay away from the bright red and green Christmas sweaters while you're at it -- I know I personally am not cute enough to pull that off.

4. Use lamps for light. Get a lamp and use that instead of overhead lighting, especially when you're curled up with a good book or getting ready for bed. It will make your whole room feel cozier and warmer, when in reality your toes are getting frostbite. It's like magic.

5. Cook dinner for your family. Help your parents out by preparing tomorrow night's meal. Spicy marinara pasta, potato soup, hot chili...the cold-weather food possibilites are endless. For ideas and recipes, check out my Pinterest.
6. Be your own barista. Instead of braving the freezing cold to get overpriced coffee, make your own caffiene conconctions, like this homemade pumpkin spice latte that won't leave you broke. Not a coffee person? Curling up by the fire with a hot cup of tea is oh so poetic.

7. Design your own coffee mug. I tend to give up on DIY crafts if they take more than two minutes to complete, but this one is definitely a keeper. I made it for my favorite teacher, and it was so cute it was almost painful to give away. Get a plain coffee mug and some jumbo Sharpies and unleash your inner artist. Pop it in the oven at 400 degrees F for 45 minutes, and voila! Cheap, easy, and cute. Did I mention it holds coffee?
8. Revamp your iPod. It wouldn't be Christmas without a Christmas playlist, would it? I'm not a huge fan of Christmas music, but if you don't listen to "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" at least five times this year, you're doing it all wrong.

9. Get something done. Yes, you already cleaned your room and made a coffee mug, but this is the season of enjoying life and getting things done! Take up a new hobby -- I'm learning guitar and French, both of which are blowing my mind. Start a project you've always wanted to finish. I cleaned out and organized all my makeup -- which was a huge feat -- so I think I'm done being productive for the year.

10. Spend some time with the Lord. You knew it was coming. I can't let you forget the Creator, can I? Devote this time to improving your relationship with God. How? Simply spend time reading His Word and talking to Him (and don't forget to listen). If you're struggling with certain issues, turn to the beautiful ladies who read this blog. Ask a question in the chat box, and you are sure to get helpful advice from girls who have been there.
Blogger and longtime GFG reader Rebekah shares her thoughts on the importance of modesty -- inside and out.

Modesty. It’s a word that gets a lot of
hate. It is really misunderstood. But just what is modesty? What does it mean
to be ‘modest’? People will answer this question differently; they will answer
it according to their own beliefs.

For example, a more conservative person may answer with...

“Modesty is wearing clothes that are less
revealing.”

“Modesty means that you dress the way the
God wants.”

“It really matters what you are wearing!”

A less conservative person might answer with this...

“Modesty means not wearing things like
short shorts or crop tops.”

“God doesn’t care about the clothes!”

“Modesty is more about the heart of it that
the actual clothes.”

What if I told you that both are wrong? And both are right? What would
you think? Will you stop reading this? Will you think that I am crazy? Well,
whatever you think or feel, please don’t stop reading this. Just hear me out!
As the title of this post says – Modesty is not just about the clothes. BUT
make no mistake; the clothes are a big part in being modest. I may be confusing
you right now but my goal is that by the end of this you will be better
informed on modesty and if you need to, you will make the change to be a
better.

How
many times have you gone to a public place and seen a girl/woman dressed
immodestly? How many times have you prayed that these girls and woman would
respect themselves more? Dressing modestly in today’s world seems
hard and frankly, frowned upon. As Christian girls/women we have a duty. We
have a calling straight from God to teach the younger ladies on the right and
correct things. (Titus 2:1-5) We have the power to dress and act modestly to
show our fellow ladies that it is not only possible, but also quite easy and
very fashionable! (No frumpiness is needed, nor will it be allowed!) Oh, hold
on, did I just say dress and act modestly? So not only do we have
dress modestly, we also have to act modestly too? But just how do we go about
doing that? Well, let me explain.

Romans 12:2 states –“And be not conformed to this world: but be
ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that
good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” This verse is saying that we
are not to cave in and believe (or accept) something that God has plainly said
no to. Modesty is one of those things. The world, and even some Christians, are
proclaiming that ‘less is more’ in the case of clothing. They are saying that
less clothes equals more attention. But my beautiful ladies, the attention that
it brings is not what you want. Nor is it any good.

Here is an example of
dressing modestly but not acting it.

‘Mary’ is a wonderful girl; she is active in her church and
youth group. She has strict parents that only allow her to wear very loose
pants, skirts or dresses and at least a t-shirt length sleeve and the neckline
has to be high enough that the breasts cannot be seen. Her parents want her to
be a virtuous young lady who respects herself. Mary’s parents want her to be a
good example to other young ladies. But such is not the case. Mary may look the
part of a modest young lady but the way she acts proves other wise. She is a
flirt and she carries herself in a ‘sexy’ manner.

Does this story sound
familiar? Do you know of a young lady that acts like this? Or perhaps, is this
you? The reason why I stress this issue is because this was me. Bad things
happened because of the way that I acted. Now, to be honest, the standards that
Mary’s parents set for her do work for some young ladies. I am not saying that
they are bad, if that is what your mother and father want, and so, that is what
goes. I have friends that dress differently than I do, but the way that they
act is more modest that ‘Mary’ is.

I’m not here to say
that certain types of clothing are immodest. Although without a doubt there are
some. But what you decide is immodest is up to you, your parents and God. What
I am here to say is that as Christians we have to set an example to our fellow
young ladies. We are not supposed to be just women, but ladies. Classy and not
trashy!

I really hope that this has helped you. I'm so honoured to be guest posting here at Girls For God today. My name

Get in tip-top shape for the new school year with clear skin! This all-natural toner fades acne scars and sunspots, smoothes skin, and minimizes blackheads and pores. It also helps to rid your skin of dirt and oil without drying, and is so easy to make, you have no excuse for putting it off.

I have always had bad skin, but sometimes store-bought products claiming to give me clear skin actually make things worse. Whenever I switch back to homemade skincare recipes that don't contain additives and harsh chemicals, my skin is noticeably healthier. You'll notice a difference in couples days, but the benefits can last you a lifetime.

what you need:
- apple cider vinegar*
- water
- empty bottle

what to do:
Simply put one part water and two parts vinegar in the bottle. Shake to mix. Apply to your face with two cotton balls every morning and night after cleansing your skin. Follow with an oil-free moisturizer.

Also try this healing honey facial that your skin will love!

*If you have dry or sensitive skin, use one part water and one part vinegar instead.
*The vinegar will burn a little, but it cleansing your pores. If it is too much, use more water next time.Melissa Reneehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16645691221964828580noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466870668952434250.post-19693379692410081822013-07-25T11:42:00.000-05:002013-07-25T12:00:06.802-05:003 Questions for Any Bible Study

Studying the Bible can seem like a daunting task. There are so many pages -- where do you begin? For Bible newbies or anyone who needs some direction, here are three simple questions that will get you on the right track and help you understand how the Bible applies to your life.

First, find whatever passage you want to study. You can do this verse by verse, chapter by chapter, for any section of the Bible you are reading.

Today let's look at Philippians 2:5-8.

1. What does it say?
Note what is happening and what is being talked about.

"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature<a href="http://www.biblestudytools.com/philippians/2.html#fn-descriptionAnchor-a" id="a" title="Or "in the form of""> God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature<a href="http://www.biblestudytools.com/philippians/2.html#fn-descriptionAnchor-b" id="b" title="Or "the form""> of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross!"

If you're stuck on what the passage is talking about, you can read around the passage for the context (Philippians 2).

2. What does it mean?
Think about the deeper meanings behind the Scripture, as well as the context (what's going on around the scene). Is the Scripture intended to be taken literally or figuratively? If there's something you don't understand, do a little research. There are plenty of websites that will help you understand the Bible, verse by verse. You can also ask your parents or your youth pastor if you get stuck.

- In these verses, Paul describes the glory and awesomeness of Jesus and how He gave it up to save us.

3. What does it mean for me?
Here's the take-away. How does it apply to your life? What are you supposed to do with it?

- In verse 5, Paul clearly states that "your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus". Going back to question 2, that means that we are to be living examples of Christ's humility. Christ was also "obedient to death" even though He is the Lord, showing that we are also to be obedient to God.
I usually don't do personal posts, but I finally uploaded my prom photos from the end of the year and thought it'd be fun to share a few with you. This was my school's first-ever prom, and it was a blast. Food, dancing, dresses, more food and more dancing...and did I mention food?

After school, my mom treated me to a trip at a local salon, which was super exciting and slightly painful. I had a few hair ideas from Pinterest but my updo became its own creation. I got the dress for only fifty dollars (that's serious shopping). We added a little gold and black tulle to the bodice to make it a little less "flashy" in that area, because unfortunately I have quite a lot to flash. I got the sparkly flats from JC Penney (I opted out of heels because I didn't want to be taller than my date, but don't tell him).

My prom date was Zach, my closest friend at my school. He's the nerdy Clark Kent type that you just know will become Superman someday. And yes, that is my makeup on his shoulder.

Best song of the night? Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. That's my jam.
shoot. <span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">If you have an aspiring
photographer as a friend, bring them along. Otherwise whip out your phone or
your old point-and-shoot and head somewhere with interesting scenery, such as
an old part of town or a sunny field. Don’t forget to bring snacks in case
someone gets the munchies. (Check out my favorite photography tips.)

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">2. Go to the theatre.<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">
Seeing a play together will not only make you feel cultured and classy, but
you’ll also be helping support creativity in your community. Have fun with it –
it’s ok to get all dolled up every now and then!

to his family (or yours). Turn on some fun music and find a good recipe. Explore your town.<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">
Scout out the best restaurants you’ve never heard of and look for things to do

there a weekend farmer’s market to visit? Have you driven past a skating rink

Refresh his wardrobe.<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;"> Shopping is nowhere near the top of your guy’s to-do
list, but next time he needs new clothes, have him take you along. You can give
him much-needed style advice and take him to lunch afterward. (Makes sure he
rolls up the sleeves of his button-up shirt. That is how you do it, boys.)

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">8. Have an all-day double-date.<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;"> Grab some paired-up friends and spend the day doing a
fun activity, shopping, and eating. Hanging out with friends is a great way to
spend time together without putting yourself in compromising situations.

Go to the fair. <span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Find
out when a nearby fair or carnival is coming to town. Candy apples, ferris wheels,
and fried everything – what could be
better?

The end of my junior year of high school has brought a big change in my life: I started my first job last month and I have loved every day of it. There's the amazing feeling of being handed my first paycheck, and also the unignorable feeling of tired feet at the end of my shift. God cares about every phase in your life, including starting (or sticking with) a job. Here are a few job tips straight from the Bible that will help you be your absolute best.

1. Be willing to make sacrifices. I'm not saying you should build an altar (although that would be quite a feat). When you have a job, there are personal sacrifices you have to make. If all your friends are going to a football game but you are scheduled to work, you have to be loyal to your employer. Sure, scanning cereal boxes isn't your ideal way to spend a Friday night, but it will teach you to be responsible. God often calls us to sacrifice our desires for His demands. Romans 12:1 says, "Offer your body as a living sacrifice to God." If you have made a promise to your employer, God will hold you to that promise. Keep Him at the forefront of everything you do and don't compromise -- people are watching you to see how Christians act.

2. Work hard. A good work ethic won't only help you grow your wallet, but it will also help you grow as a person. God calls us to "be diligent, for it brings wealth" (Proverbs 10:4). Who doesn't like wealth? God doesn't offer a get-rich-quick scheme like some Christians believe, but He does esteem those who work hard.

3. Serve. The idea of being a servant doesn't sound pleasant, but even the most highly regarded people in history referred to themselves as servants of others. (US President John F. Kennedy recognized his duty to serve his country rather than requiring that his country serve him.) Paul, who wrote 13 books in the Bible, called himself a servant of the Lord. Jesus even washed the dirty feet of his disciples (yuck!) to show that He came to serve. In Galatians 5:13, Paul tells us to "serve one another in love". When you have a job, you are serving the customers and your boss. Ask God to give you a servant's heart and help you be a blessing to those around you.

5. Don't conform. In Romans 12:2, Paul warns us to not conform to the ways of the world. When your coworkers cuss or gossip, don't go along with it. Galatians 5:22-26 outlines the "fruits of the spirit" -- qualities that will help you succeed not only in your job, but in your relationships and your life. Be patient, treat people with kindness, and work with a joyful heart.

6. Dedicate it to God. Colossians 3:17 says, "Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." After each day of work, thank God for giving you your job and ask Him to help you continue working in a way that pleases Him.
Spring symbolizes new beginnings, making it a great time to try something new with your look. Whether it's a trendy hairstyle or a new makeup, consider this your infallible guide to all things beautiful this season.

When it comes to your makeup, it's all about looking fresh and accentuating your youth. Gone is the harsh liner and flat faces of winter; this spring, aim for dewy skin, soft eyes, blushing cheeks, and girly pink lips. A subtle smokey eye for nighttime events will take your look from natural to sophisticated in little time. Set down the tweezers -- full brows have been in style for a couple years and are much more flattering than their overplucked counterparts. And if makeup isn't your thing, don't worry -- spring is the perfect season to go for the natural look.

Quick Tip: Sweep highlighting powder across your cheekbones to really brighten your face.

The new season gives all of us an opportunity to change up our hairstyle. These ideas are great if you don't want to commit to a drastic cut or color change (which could turn out scarier than a horror movie, honestly). Braids were big in 2012 and they're still a hit this year. (If you're still stuck on one technique, expand your braid know-how with a fishtail braid or a messy side braid.) Hair accessories, which I collect like a proud hoarder, aren't for little girls anymore -- try grown-up pieces with a messy braid like Blake Lively (below). Try a top-knot, low pony, or messy waves, because who really wants to go through the trouble to get perfect hair? This season, a lazy-hair attitude is tres chic.

Make the most of your time off with these fun and productive ideas.

1. Go on a family day-trip. Hop in the car and explore a nearby city. Eat where the locals gather and find something fun to do that's unique to the town you're perusing.

2. Give yourself a spa day. Treat your hair to an easy DIY hair mask and start the week right by giving yourself a perfect manicure.

3. Make a new friend. Invite an "unpopular" girl to the movies. You cover the tickets, she covers the popcorn, and you have a chance to build a relationship with someone who may be in need of a Christian friend.

"Encourage one another and build each other up."
- 1 Thessalonians 5:11

4. Invite a friend over and cook dinner for your family. You can find some yummy recipes on my Pinterest, or make some simple desserts if cooking dinner isn't your thing. Send some home with your friend so she her family can taste your masterpiece, too.

5. Spend some time with God. Spring Break is a great time to have some fun and relaxation away from school. In the midst of the activities you've planned, don't forget to make time for your Creator. Perhaps this is the week to start a new devotional or get back on your Bible reading program. Maybe this is the perfect time to just pray and see what God is doing in your life. Whatever your plans this week, put God at the top of your list.

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
- Matthew 6:33

Our society is obsessed with "beauty". It's easy to get caught up in all the media and advertisements that seem to say that if you don't have star-worthy features, you just need more products, and if you don't have the body of a model, you need to starve yourself. Tiffany Dawn shares her struggles with body image, eating disorders, and true beauty in her book The Insatiable Quest for Beauty.

When I sat down to read the book Tiffany sent me, I was immediately hooked. She gives big-sister advice and shares her struggles in a genuine, honest, and raw way that's relatable to many girls. A tough breakup left her feeling insecure and she strove to do whatever it took to be "beautiful". In The Insatiable Quest for Beauty, she reflects on how this took her down a path of hurt and despair until she discovered her true beauty in the eyes of her Creator.

One of my favorite things about this book is creativity Tiffany had with it. Each chapter is set up like a coffee date -- it's quick, sweet, and leaves you wanting more. The end of each chapter gives you a challenge that helps you move in the right direction with your quest for beauty. You can then go to the book's website where you'll find more helpful notes that go with each chapter. Her CD, This is Who I Am, also depicts her thoughts on beauty, life, and the Lord and makes for great listening when you don't have time to sit down and read. (Plus, her voice sounds like an angel. Just saying.)

If you struggle with how you look, or just want a good heartfelt read, I recommend checking out Tiffany's book. It's fast-paced, poignant, and her struggle is one every girl can understand. Click here to go to her website for more on her story.

For most girls, the ideal guy is a man -- someone who can stand on his own two feet, and help you stay on yours. A mousy personality just isn't attractive in anyone, especially in guys. Yet many girls jump to asking their crush on a date themselves, not knowing that this just encourages the guy to keep up the mousy attitude and put little effort in the relationship.

In today's ultra-feminist, 21st-century world, it is culturally acceptable for a girl make the first move in a relationship. Opinions differ greatly on this subject, but I think that it's ok for you to ask a guy out. Notice that I said it was "ok". I don't think it's a sin to ask your crush on a date. At the same time, I don't think it's the best choice for either of you. Why?

Men are supposed to be leaders. While girls don't have to be damsels on distress, we need to let the guys do their job. What you don't realize is that usually when a guy asks you out, it's something he's put a lot of thought into. It takes a lot of courage for a guy to ask a girl out. As my friend James told me, "One of a guy's biggest fears is rejection from the girl he likes." He has to get over that fear to ask you out in order to be the man in the relationship. If you do all the work for him, he's going to rely on you for the whole relationship. If you've made it that easy for him, he won't feel the need to do the work it takes to keep you with him.

Another reason to let him take initiative: you don't have to face any painful rejection. By letting him ask, you have the power to accept or decline his offer, and you know for sure that he likes you. No guesswork involved.

In short, letting the guy do the asking will help get the relationship off to a great start.

The exciting thing about packing your clothes for a trip is that in some cases, the people you'll see don't know how you normally dress. This means you have a chance to make a great first impression, and this starts with what you wear. Plan your travel wardrobe the smart way: choose pieces that can mix-and-match with several outfits. This comes in handy when you only have room in your suitcase for two pairs of pants -- or when you find out that you packed one shirt too few and have to wear the same outfit twice (oops!).

Layers are great for keeping you warm and looking great. It's always great to have a few camisoles or tank tops on hand to slip under sweaters, jackets, and shirts. The great thing about light layers is that they take up very little room in your suitcase but you'll use them often. (Bonus: When you forget your pajamas, you'll still have something to sleep in.)

When you get to your destination, odds are you'll open your suitcase and have nothing to wear. To keep you from looking like a tourist, pack a few trendier pieces along with you classics. Colored denim is a great way to add spice to your outfit without going overboard, but you don't want to forget your good old blue jeans. The same goes for shoes: Pack as little pairs of shoes as possible, and only grab the ones that go with anything. Ballet flats and equestrian boots are two great options that will always look classy.

Keep your accessories at a minimum. They don't take much space in your suitcase, but you don't want to be decked out in glam when you're climbing Everest or fending off angry polar bears. Leave your expensive jewelry at home to keep it safe from locals with eyes for all things shiny, and take a scarf or two instead. It'll keep you warm and add another layer of cozy cuteness to your outfit.

Happy traveling!

You're probably familliar with the story of Jesus' birth: baby Jesus is born in a manger and grows up to save the world. But the real Christmas story began in Genesis at the fall of man.

In the book of Genesis, we learn that God created Adam and Eve, the first two people on earth. He also created a beautiful garden filled with all sorts of fruit trees for them to enjoy. In the middle of this garden, he placed two special trees.

The Tree of Life gave eternal life to whomever ate its fruit.

The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil gave death to whomever ate its fruit.

God gave the entire garden to Adam and Eve, but He had one simple rule: "You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden [the Knowledge of Good and Evil]... or you will die."

Adam and Eve broke God's one rule. They each took a bite of the fruit from the forbidden tree. They both suffered the eternal consequences.

The Hebrew word for the "death" mentioned in this story actually means a spiritual separation. The most precious part of humanity died that day. After Adam and Eve were forced to leave the garden, God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” (Genesis 3:22)

At first it seems cruel, not to let them have a second chance and keep them from eternal life. But now that humans were tainted with sin, God knew that letting them eat from the Tree of Life would force His beloved creation to live in their sin forever. So "He placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life." (Genesis 3:24)

Fast forward to Luke 2. Jesus is born, and later he is presented in the temple. There was a righteous man in Jerusalem at that time named Simeon and "it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah." (Luke 2:26) The Holy Spirit told him to go to the temple, and when he saw the baby in Mary's arms, he held him and said,

“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you may now dismiss your servant in peace.
For my eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” (Luke 2:29-32)

Simeon was ready to die now that he had seen the Messiah he had been waiting for. He recognized Him even as a baby. Take a look at what he says to Mary:

“This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” (Luke 2:34-35)

Simeon was declaring that Jesus is the sword that guards eternal life. Just like you couldn't get to the Tree of Life without going through the sword, we can't get to God without Jesus. Now that God offered His Son to us, we don't need the tree because God is the one who gives eternal life. Because our sins are forgiven through Christ, we can live forever without becoming slaves to our sin. In John 14:6, Jesus says, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Too often we focus on having a "cute" Christmas. The tree is decorated, the stockings are hung by the fireplace, and we sing carols about baby Jesus in a manger. This is all fine, but sometimes we need a reminder that Christmas isn't something quaint -- it's a time we celebrate the magnificent birth of our Lord, the sword that points the way to eternal life.Melissa Reneehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16645691221964828580noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466870668952434250.post-18489731004027334722012-12-18T15:13:00.000-06:002012-12-21T16:08:24.585-06:005 Ways to De-Stress Your Life

Are you stressed out? Sometimes the anxiety in your life can stop you from being productive. Take time to relax and refocus with these tips.

It's easy to get too caught up in your busy schedule. Sometimes you need to relax. Treat yourself to a spa night, go to bed early, listen to some positive music, or take a walk outside. Giving yourself a chance to rest will help you be more productive later. Having an organized room will help you calm down as well -- the clutter in your house can add more clutter to every aspect of your life.

Don't worry about diets, but make sure you're taking care of yourself. Your body needs the right fuel to keep going strong. Cut down on your carb, sugar, and salt intake; these foods can slow your body down and make you feel tired and irritable. Make sure you're getting enough fruits and vegetables. It might be a good idea to take a vitamin supplement -- they can give you more energy and a brighter complexion. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night to keep you at your best. Talking to a trusted friend will help you unwind and sort things out. If you're dealing with something serious, talk to your parents, your youth pastor, or another adult you trust.

If you're facing a tough decision, list out the pros and cons of each choice. If you're stressed with your workload, take things one at a time. Don't think about the second task until you've completed the first. You'll get more done and spend less time worrying.

Sometimes the only thing you can do is pray. It's the most powerful thing you can do. Take 10-20 minutes out of your day to talk to God about how you feel and what's going on in your life. Listen to Christian music to stay positive (Tenth Avenue North is awesome). Read the Bible and look for passages that relate to your situation. You can also share prayer requests on the GFG blog.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; line-height: 115%;">For some people, Christmas is the loneliest time of the year. Many people don't have loved ones to celebrate with, a roof over their heads, clothes to keep them warm, or even their next meal. You can help give back this season by volunteering at your local food bank or soup kichen, donating used clothes, or cooking meals for needy families in your community. You can make a difference in someone's life by showing them Christ's love and care.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; line-height: 115%;">5.
Know Christ.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; line-height: 115%;">While getting presents and wearing ugly Christmas sweaters is fun, the real reason we get together to celebrate Christmas is to remember how Jesus, God's perfect and holy Son, came to earth as a human baby to endure the world's pain and alleviate suffering. He humbled himself to a vulnerable state so that we can be saved from the turmoil that comes from a life without Christ. Read the Christmas story in Luke 2:1-20. Keep your Savior in mind this Christmas season and remember what He went through for you.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.5pt; line-height: 115%;">

GFG reader Courtney R. shares her thoughts on weight, makeup, and finding your worth in God's eyes.

Do you ever feel like you’re not good enough and too ugly to be worth anything at all? I did. And still do sometimes. I know that feeling. When you look in the mirror and just think to yourself, “Ugh. Why can’t I be skinny, pretty, tall, etc.?” And then comes the comparison. “So and so has a shape with curves. How comes I don’t? She has better hair than I do. Will I ever get a chest?” I’ve been there, played that same game. And it’s not a fun game to play either. It damages our self-esteem and ruins our confidence. Being a girl is hard! Let’s face it ladies, we’ve all had one of those days when we feel worthless, like God made a mistake when He created you.

Well, guess what? God don’t make junk!

Genesis 1:31 says: “And God saw everything that He had made and behold, it was very good….”

Psalm 139:14 says: “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Whenever you start to feel “ugly” remind yourself that God thinks you are gorgeous. He sent Jesus to die for us because he thought you were to die for! Say a little prayer, asking God to remind you how beautiful you are. He wants you to be comfortable in your own skin. And girls, listen, you have GOT to stop playing the comparison game! He made us all different for a reason. Some are tall, others short, some have naturally curly hair, others not so much. Who cares? It’s what makes us, us. You were made to stand out from the crowd, to be your own person with your own characteristics. You were made to be you, not the girl down the street.

Let’s talk about weight. Touchy subject, yes. Does it make you who you are, no. Weight is just a number. Don’t let it control you! You wouldn’t believe the amount of eating disorders in America. Here are a few statistics:

* 95% of people with eating disorders are people between the ages of 12 and 25.

* 50% of girls between the ages 11 and 13 see themselves as overweight.

* 80% of 13 year olds have attempted to lose weight.

* Between 1 and 5 percent of teen girls meet criteria for an eating disorder diagnosis.

* 15% of young women in the U.S. show considerable disordered eating behavior and attitude.

Isn’t that awful? Those numbers do mean something. It means we are overestimating the value of our weight. It’s important to eat right and exercise, but we can’t let the numbers run our lives.

How about make-up? First and foremost, ladies, we need to grasp the fact that God did not give us a beautiful face to be colored all over and re-done through surgeries to make it “look better”. We are real people, with real feelings, and real smiles. Don’t overuse make-up and make your wonderful self something its not. Your not fake. You’re real. Show that to others around you. Let them know that you are comfortable being in your skin with your all na-tur-al beauty. (Hint, hint: Start a school-wide “All Na-tur-al” day on any day of the school week! Wear a t-shirt and sweats with your hair pulled back and no make-up).

So we’ve covered the comparison game, weight, and make-up, so what’s left? Well, that my darlings, is discovering who you are in Christ. What does Jesus say about his daughters?

Psalm 31:30 says, “Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

1 Timothy 2:9-10 says, “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.”

Proverbs 31:20 says, “She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.”

1 Peter 3:3-4 says, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of jewelry and fine clothes. Rather it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

These are just a few verses about what qualities God wants his daughters to have. Pray daily for strength and compassion and a loving spirit. Talk to God like he’s your best friend. It doesn’t have to be rehearsed or anything specific. Just talk to him and you’ll see a difference in your life and how you see yourself.

I hope that after reading this, you can at least kind of see that you are one heck of a gorgeous young woman! Be yourself and let no one change your unique personality that God has given you. Behold, you are you, you are smart, you are talented, you are of great value and purpose, and most of all... You are beautiful.Melissa Reneehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16645691221964828580noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466870668952434250.post-61540837320443872102012-11-25T21:02:00.000-06:002012-11-25T21:02:33.830-06:00Christmas Gift Guide for Everyone Under $50

It's time for some new clothes! Grab your favorite stylish piece from this list and stay cozy as fall and winter come into full swing.

1. Want to be comfy and cute? A sequin sweatshirt is not only soft and warm, but also has just enough bling to be worthy of Christmas shopping and chilling with friends over Thanksgiving break.

2. Bomber jackets add a touch of edge to any outfit. Pair with girly pieces for a balanced look.

3. A bright sweater is a cozy must-have for fall and winter. You'll never want to take it off!

4. A trench coat is classic and chic. I just got my first ever and I absolutely love it. (Another reason it's awesome: You can wear a pajama shirt under it and no one will know.)

6. Glitter flats are great because, well, they're glittery. (Do you need another reason?)

Simplify (or enhance!) your makeup routine this season with my six favorite makeup essentials to help you look your best this fall. (Bonus: grab the best products, without the guesswork.)

1. A dewy foundation will give you a healthy complexion as your skin adjusts to the changing weather. If you have good skin, trade foundation out for a BB cream -- not only does it blur imperfections, but it moisturizes your skin.

I use Maybelline Dream Fresh BB.

2. Dust bronzer over your face to create a faux glow reminiscent of last summer's tan. Focus on areas where the sun would naturally warm your face: your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin.

I'm loving Clinique Almond Blossom All-Over Color.

3. A pretty blush is a must for rosy cheeks and keeps you from looking washed out. Smile, then apply to where your cheeks are fattest.

4. Mascara is a must for any look.

My favorites? Maybelline One by One, Maybelline Mega Plush, and Clinique High Lengths.

5. Eyeliner isn't neccessary, but it definitely defines your eyes. Try classic black, cozy brown, or deep plum.

The best $3 eyeliner ever? ELF Cream Eyeliner.

6. Lipstick can pull any look together. This season, try something unexpected. A classic cherry pout is super sophisticated, while a pretty berry is universally flattering.
