Why is it important to read your Bible every day? Our minds are focused on so many things throughout the day that reading the Bible can seem like more of a chore than a desire. How can you make time for reading the Bible? What more can you learn from it? If it was written so long ago, how can it still be worth anything to you today? How are you supposed to focus on God's word if it's so...boring? Those are all valid questions, and I want to help you find the answers you need.
Let's look at a few reasons why you might be leaving your Bible on the shelf.
- "I don't have enough time." Juggling school, family, and a social life can be tricky. Sometimes it feels like there's not enough room in the day for reading your Bible. If you're like me, you want to spend time with God, but you end up doing everything else instead. Here's the deal: Spending time with God should be on the top of your to-do list. If you can make time for all the extra stuff you do in a day, how can you not make time for the One who gave you that day? In your downtime, pop open your Bible and pray about a few verses. If you really don't have anywhere to squeeze in some good God-time, try replacing one of your daily duties or activities with God. Try limiting Facebook time or refusing to get up in the morning until you've spent time with God. Little changes in your daily routine can mean big changes for your life.
- "I already know everything about it." You've been to Sunday school and heard all the stories, and you can recite John 3:16 at break-neck speed. It's easy to think you've "got your fill" of what God has to offer you, but there is so much more to the Bible than just knowing facts and stories. The Bible is a compilation of 66 different books filled with words written to you straight from the Creator. Each time you read the Bible, God will reveal something new to you.
- "It was written a long time ago, so it's not relevant today." The Bible doesn't talk about iTunes, movies, or dating, so how could it still be useful? The Bible is relevant and meaningful to every person for all eternity. It will never be out-dated, and it's still the top selling book in the whole world. It talks about what you watch and listen to (Philippians 4:8) and has tons of info on true love (check out 1 Corinthians 13). Scripture can be applied to your everyday life and teach you things you never knew it could.
- "It's boring." You have to read enough books for school, so why spend time reading a bunch of old stories and instructions? Here's a good reason: The Bible covers all sorts of genres, like romance, thriller, suspense, horror, historical, and even futuristic. It's truly has something for everyone. The Bible is full of murder, assassination plots, witches, kings, battles, and love. The Bible is God's love letter to you, the story of how he cares for his people even when they turn away from him.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
What was your excuse for not reading the Bible regularly?
